Highways
Kandiyohi
County is centrally located in the heart of west central Minnesota
and is easily accessed by several major highways.
U.S.
Highway 12 runs east-west through Atwater, Kandiyohi,
Willmar and Pennock providing easy access to the Twin Cities.
State
Highway 7 runs east-west through the southern portion
of the county in proximity to the communities of Lake Lillian,
Blomkest and Prinsburg.
State
Highway 23, one of the few diagonal roads in Minnesota,
runs Northeast to Southwest through the communities of New
London, Spicer, Willmar and Raymond providing access to St.
Cloud and Interstate 94. Highway 23 is a 10 ton road.
In August 2005 a reconstruction of Highway 23 was completed
making it a four-lane from the U.S. Highway 71 interchange
north of Willmar to County Road 31 north of New London.
MnDOT plans to continue its reconstruction of Highway 23 between
New London and Paynesville to four lanes. Additional improvements
at the U.S. Highway 71/State Highway 23 interchange may occur
in 2015, if funding is available. Information on the
project is on MnDOT's web site at http://projects.dot.state.mn.us/seh/2371.
U.S.
Highway 71 North-South is a 10-ton road that runs
through the center of Kandiyohi County. Highway 71 is also
served by State Highway 9 on the Northwest portion of the
county and State Highway 40 to the Southwest out of Willmar.
Several
trucking lines located in the cities of Kandiyohi County provide
intrastate and interstate freight service.
