2013 laureates announced for Siehl Prize in Agriculture

4.2013: A world-renowned expert in wheat diseases, an executive who developed important new packaging and food safety techniques, and a pair of entrepreneurs who lead an international technology company grounded in the poultry industry are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Siehl Prize in Agriculture.

The prize is awarded annually by the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Recipients are chosen in three categories: knowledge (teaching, research and outreach); agribusiness; and production agriculture.

Expanding East—Nova-Tech executive moving to China to establish overseas office for the company; manufacturing facility will remain in Willmar

2.26.2013: WILLMAR—Chinese customers are waiting in line for Nova-Tech products and the company is quickly developing the infrastructure to deliver the goods and provide service.Aaron Madsen

A key part of that effort will be Aaron Madsen, who leaves on Monday for Shanghai to develop the China corporate headquarters for Willmar-based Nova-Tech.

Madsen, 33, is currently manager of the company’s sales and marketing department and will add the title of general manager of Nova-Tech Asia.

Helping them grow

4.9.2013: WILLMAR—Kandiyohi County and Afghanistan are worlds apart but when it comes to farming, Leroy Petersen sees the common ground they share.

"We discovered we had the same weeds in our farms half a world apart," he said.Leroy Petersen

Petersen recently joined the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission as its agriculture and renewable energy specialist.  He brings years of practical experience as a farmer near Pennock, but he also has a global perspective acquired during stints as an ag consultant in Afghanistan.

One of the key lessons he learned in Afghanistan is that in order for farmers to benefit from their labor, they need an environment and an infrastructure that support them, Petersen said.

Klobuchar learns of growing export business during tour of Nova-Tech

2.20.2013:  WILLMAR—Sen. Amy Klobuchar stopped to look at a group of large packing crates ready for shipping near the end of her tour of Nova-Tech Engineering’s facilities on the MinnWest Technology Campus Tuesday morning.

“These are going to China,” said Jim Sieben, president of MinnWest.  Klobuchar, D-Minn., was delighted and wanted to pose for a photo in front of the crates.Amy Klobuchar
